A towering commander of the reborn Band of the Hawk. Like Zodd, Grunbeld is a true warrior who hunts for enemies worth staking his life against. His flame-red hair marks his northern blood, and his rebirth as an Apostle gave him the form of a colossal crimson dragon.

Long before he bowed to Griffith, Grunbeld was a legend of the north: the commander who held the line against the Tudor Empire through the Hundred-Year War. Mule Wolflame recognizes the name the moment he hears it. His fall from that hero to an Apostle is told in the spin-off novel The Flame Dragon Knight.

A flat face for crushing armor and a spike on the reverse for hooking shields and punching through barricades. It tore through ranks of armored Kushan soldiers in a single swing.

A monster-faced shield heavy enough to shrug off cannonballs, hiding a cannon of its own and a pair of blades that spring out mid-fight.

Released, his body is armored in crystalline corundum, harder than steel. Guts still cracked it open with the Dragon Slayer.
A castle gate bursts open from outside and a giant steps through the wreckage. Grunbeld cuts down the Kushan garrison with hammer, cannon and hidden blades, then kneels to Griffith beside Zodd and Locus.
He shields Sonia and Mule from restless Apostles, reminding them that the Hawk's guests are not to be touched.
Sent to burn Flora's mansion, he challenges a wounded Guts, then meets the Berserker Armor. His hammer breaks, his corundum cracks, and the Great Flame Dragon is finally stopped by Flora's last wall of fire.
At Vritannis he stands among the Hawk's strongest against Emperor Ganishka's legions, and later waits at the port of Falconia for Griffith's return.
